Chapter 9: The Development Phase: Writing the Course
This chapter walks you through the process of getting your information and ideas in writing so you can make technology meet the objectives of your course.
This chapter helps identify the questions you need to ask and the process to follow to determine if e-learning is a good solution, the best way to approach it, and how to get everyone on board.
Many organizations around the world are starting to apply the principles of brain research to their learning environments. On May 7, join Carol Leaman and Alice Kim as they leverage real learning data to determine what kind of effect is this having on behavior and, ultimately, performance.
English may be the language of global business, but everything changes when corporate goals require the provision of e-learning materials in alternate languages. The most forgotten secret of successful multilingual training and development is the need for a global language translation strategy. Are you training diverse audiences, such as non-English or second-language learners; expanding your corporate reach into new countries; providing e-learning resources in more than one language; experiencing delays and inconsistencies; and/or receiving complaints regarding previously translated training materials? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, this session is for you. Discover the foundational components of a successful global language translation strategy and will arm you with specific action items pertinent to your organization's learning objectives surrounding e-learning. Building upon their published whitepaper on the same subject, the speakers will share practical steps for implementation based on industry best practices and client success stories.
Too often, instructional designers end up trapped in their boxes of theory. Sometimes we need to open that box and peer outside to glean ideas and inspiration from sources outside our industry. Jim Henson started working as a puppeteer in 1954, long before many of us considered corporate instructional design (ID) as a career. Yet, Jim Henson applied many of the core ideas from ID in his imaginative work. Viewing our own theories and ideas used in different ways is a great way to help inspire us to think of new and fearless ideas. We will cover Henson's use of storyboarding, storytelling, iteration, templates, and more, and bring it back to practical uses in instructional design. We'll get creative, discussing how construction of a Muppet can translate to construction of a course. Also, this session is fun. There might even be a Muppet.
When rolling out live online training to your workforce, what needs to happen to ensure it goes smoothly? This session will cover the three key steps every organization should follow in a virtual training implementation. It will provide practical examples from organizations that have successfully implemented live online training, along with specific tips for success. Whether its a complex blended learning program for a large global audience or only a single synchronous session, proper preparation is essential. Therefore, this highly interactive session will help you prepare your participants, your facilitators, and your technology for live online learning. It will also provide checklists and guidelines that you can put to immediate use.
Is your virtual classroom ready for global learners? According to recent ASTD research, globalization is one of the most important trends affecting the workforce. So how can you make sure your virtual classroom training is appropriate for all learners, regardless of their location? When you prepare for a global audience as a facilitator or designer, you need to think globally about every aspect of the training from the learner perspective, and make adjustments geared to those perspectives. During this session you will explore the five key areas for global virtual classroom success: logistics, content, learning styles, rehearsal, and facilitation. You will leave with strategies and tips to successfully design and deliver training for the global virtual classroom. The speaker has designed and delivered hundreds of training sessions via virtual classroom to World Bank Group staff in every region of the world. She will share practical examples from a variety of courses that were converted for delivery in a global virtual classroom.
We know that simulations are a fantastic way to allow people to practice skills in a realistic, but safe environment that gives them the opportunity to learn from mistakes. However, actually sitting down and creating a simulation that feels real to your audience is definitely harder than it sounds. So why not learn from the industry that's been successfully simulating real and imagined situations for years: video games! Sure, video games are a fun diversion, but there's also a lot in common with how they're created and the way a strong simulation should be designed. In this session, we'll take a look at how video games developers have overcome some of the same major hurdles that we experience when developing simulations for training, such as deciding what your simulation structure should be, narrowing down potential ideas to just the ones that work, and making player choices matter (or at least seem like they matter). You'll also learn about game design techniques that will make your simulation development process run smoother, such as iterative design and prototyping. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or someone who couldn't recognize Pong if your life depended on it, you'll still learn a lot about what video games can teach us about making simulations that are fun and effective.
After spending 20 years leading insanely talented teams trying to create the perfect approach to e-learning, the speaker finally gave up and started over. In this session the speaker will share (painful) lessons learned from leading a small team in a three year project to build a new approach to digital learning. You'll learn a tool and technology agnostic approach to creating super-engaging, mobile-friendly, digital content that can support diverse needs: from structured learning to performance support to field exercises. Whether you're a learning leader or a learning developer, you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll walk out with the seven secrets of a new approach to digital learning content.
When AT&T acquired Leap Wireless (which operated the Cricket brand), AT&T announced it would merge Cricket with AT&T's Aio Wireless to become 'the new Cricket,' with a goal for the two to operate as one within 60 days. This session will describe the aggressive training initiative for 10,000 Cricket retail employees. The speaker, a veteran of three AT&T mergers, applied many lessons learned when designing the Cricket training initiative and added a newly developed, mobile performance support tool to emphasize just-in-time information. All resources foster self-sufficiency and were optimized for smartphone use, the primary tools for retail employees. Components of the training initiative included one day of instructor-led training focusing on the new Cricket brand and culture, to supplement an internal instructor staff, Aio worked with Wounded Warriors and other groups to hire 38 veterans as temporary instructors. A suite of WBTs and simulations covered compliance and privacy issues, network and device training, point-of-sale system guidance, and customer support. The program incorporated a performance support tool for use on the sales floor to rapidly access the information needed to handle real-time customer questions and a step-by-step guide for all major systems transactions. The speaker will describe how his team designed and tested the program within a tight timeline, the supporting technologies used to manage and deliver resources, and the ongoing role of collaboration and social learning within the new organization.
