Last January 20th I took off from New York for the Pacific Coast on a } four week's business trip. It takes from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., same day, to get from New York to Los Angeles by air these days, but the difference be-tween the ice and snow of winter in the East and the warm sunshine of Southern California made me think that perhaps the California Chamber of Commerce might be right.
In 1949, Mr. Richard C.uyon, Per-sonnel Assistant, The Standard Oil Company (Ohio), conducted a survey of Training Directors on a national basis which was shed in the March-April and May-June issues of The Journal.
In this comparison of locally compiled data and the data presented in the na-tional survey, it is necessary to bear in mind that the reporting sample for the San Francisco Bay Area was in most cases less than 20 per cent of that cov-ered in the national study.
The "Training Committee" is a tool that the Training Director can use to help him sell top management on train-ing, to get the cooperation of line super-visors and to assure himself that his training fits the needs of the organiza-tion. In one swoop it cuts through the training man's most difficult problems. The "Training Committee" can be used in large or small companies.
We might well have titled this eve-ning's talk "How to Tell the Boys What You Know." And the prerequisite for best doing this job is aptly expressed in the following quotation from Mahatrna Gandhi: "God himself dare not ap-pear to a hungry man except in the form of bread."
The Canadian Industrial Trainers' Association, Montreal, will hold their 5 th An nual Conference at the Mount Royal Hotel in Montreal, April 19 and 20.'
Featured speakers of the conference will be Dr. F. Cyril James, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, McGill University, who will speak on "To-day's Need for Knowle dge" and Mr. J. A. Fuller, Pres-ident, The Shawinigan Water and Pow-er Company, whose topic will be "The Well-informed Employee is a Better Employee."
As one faces the chaotic state of today's World, he cannot but note the tragic lack of leadership in many spots. History has usually provided outstanding men for leaders when it provided circumstances demanding a high quality of leadership. It seems now that such men are slow to appear in the quantity conditions demand.
ASTD changed its name to ATD to meet the growing needs of a dynamic, global profession.
