OUR EXPERIENCE with the Worthington Personal History Analysis covers the span of approximately 2% years. Since early 1948, the Personal History Analyses of more than 250 per-sons have been carefully studied within The Glenn L. Martin Company. We now feel that we are in position to write a factual report which may be of interest to other industries.
The American Society of Training Directors will hold its Seventh Annual Conference at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 15, 16 and 17th, 1951. Mr. E. L. Burkhart, Supervisor of Personnel Development for the Electric Storage Battery Company, has been ap-pointed General Chairman.
The newly set up ASTD Library at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, can save the Society's members much time and trouble by providing an abun-dance of material from which to get new ideas and methods that have been thoroughly tested and tried. A library like this should, on the average, save anywhere from ten to thirty percent of an investigator's time.
The year 1950 started with a firm resolve on ray part to keep all ASTD committees working hard and to get constructive results from them for the good of each one of us. Although many have worked and are still working, what I had hoped for has not been en-tirely accomplished.
On December 6, "Doc" Laffer, Pres-ident of ASTD, was present by invita-tion at a meeting called by the Depart-ment of Labor in Washington, D. C. Prominent representatives of industry, universities, vocational schools, unions and the U. S. Office of Education and the National Security Resources Board were present.
This meeting was of a general ex-ploratory nature and allowed the many divergent ideas as to how the problem of training in war time should be han-dled to be put forward for discussion.
Anticipating the need for qualified T.W.I, leaders in industry, The Central Ohio Society of T raining Directors has embarked on an intensive program of refresher training for its more than thirty members.
Recently a survey was made of all members to discover their qualifications for T.W.I, leadership and their interest in courses to qualify them for such work.
Reference is made to the article, ''How to Make Ideas Stick," by Louis B. Allen, in the July-August, 1950 issue of The Journal of Industrial Training, in which I he color black is recommended for a flannel board.
My own experience with a black one, of wool flannel, was such that when we needed an additional one we had it made of a shade of light apple green.
The following is a -personal letter, dated August 26, written to Frank Welsh, Training Department, International Business Machines Corporation, Endicott, New York, who forwarded it to the JOURNAL. Now then, even though the list is admittedly incomplete, how does the picture look? Dishearteningly bad? Or perhaps only a little weak here and there? Maybe you'd like to grant yourself a medal of honor for excellence on all these ten points?
As the season progresses ye editor begins to get more and more mail from the secretaries of the various AST D affiliates around the country. I here are some chapters, however, that forget to send even the mimeographed notices of forthcoming meetings.
ASTD changed its name to ATD to meet the growing needs of a dynamic, global profession.
