An interview with various business professionals including Richard Florida, Howard Gardner, and Malcolm Gladwell is presented. When asked about the skills that would best fit in the labor market of 2008, Florida refers to the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, citing that economic growth is primarily driven by creativity. When asked about the biggest problem facing workplace training programs, Gardner states that employees struggle when it comes to self-educating and learning opportunities.
The article discusses various issues regarding the 2008 U.S. presidential election campaigns. The author suggests that the key to organizational change is communication, regardless of where the changes are taking place within the company. It is also essential that companies, like the candidates, should consider embracing technology and innovation through their campaigns. It is also mentioned that a successful business invests in its future by identifying, nourishing and cultivating leaders through training programs.
The article discusses the results of a survey that inquired after the methods used by companies and employers to retain high-potential and frontline employees. The survey was conducted by an outplacement and executive coaching firm called ClearRock, located in Boston, Massachusetts. According to their research, ClearRock found that the most frequently used tactic in retaining strong employees is to improve the hiring selection process. In addition, employers also improved training and coaching and provided better compensation.

The article focuses on the role of workplace learning and performance (WLP) professionals. In the 2007 economy, the skills that the workforce possesses determines the profitability of the private sector, service delivery in the public sector, as well as the achievement of shared objectives in the volunteer sector. The majority of learning takes place in the work arena, and it is essential for an organization to develop a culture that encourages this. It is also important for individuals to recognize the importance of knowledge and gaining new skills to advance their value to a company.
The article discusses the results of a survey that was conducted by the recruitment and talent management agency Hudson on the effectiveness of retention strategies in the U.S. According to the survey, 72 percent of employees have rated their organizations as a good place to work, while 64 percent have stated that their employers value their contributions. Moreover, 75 percent of managers have reported that they were unaware of an active retention strategy being used within their organization. Steven Levine, vice president of Hudson, has cited several work-life balance initiatives which include flex time, work at home offerings and incentives as a way to keep employees satisfied.
