MWH Global: A Multi-Faceted Approach to Reduce Turnover


MWH Global (now part of Stantec) is an engineering, consulting, and construction firm with a focus on water and natural resources projects. MWH’s employees develop deep relationships with their clients and deliver customized solutions from start to finish on each project. To maintain strong client relations across geographically dispersed project locations, their workforce of 6,800 is spread across 180 offices. 

In early 2014, MWH began experiencing higher-than-normal turnover rates, and leaders knew they had a problem. High turnover meant that they needed to replace employees (which is costly and often difficult given shortages of workers with the technical skills MWH needs), and that innovation, company culture, and institutional knowledge could be negatively affected. The talent development team collaborated with departments and individuals across the organization to address this challenge. The team developed tactics on both an organizational and programmatic level. 

The ultimate goal—improve employee retention.
