Keynote: Embracing Disruption in Learning
Rita Bailey

Disruptive brands such as Uber, Airbnb, and Amazon understand consumer trends before they become trends and capitalize on opportunities to stay ahead of competition.

Global changes are creating a demand to disrupt the way we hire, train, and retain talent. Technology advances, shifts in demographics, and the constant need to upskill are disrupting how people learn. Trends are shifting to innovative platforms and programs that encourage and enable self-development.

In this keynote, you’ll be inspired to challenge status quo practices and consider new, engaging ways to ignite extraordinary experiences that drive innovative change and excitement for learning. You will learn how to:

  • Dissect belief barriers.

  • Understand types and stages of disruption.

  • Identify examples of disruptive L&D approaches.

Keynote: The Importance of Engaging the Modern Learner
David Smith

It should come as no surprise to the L&D professional that current research shows that the modern learner is distracted, overwhelmed, and impatient.

And while we can move our training from the traditional classroom into both digital and virtual formats, is that enough? Are we not just moving from one modality to another without addressing the core challenge that faces us within the profession—that of engaging our learners? It is very easy for us to provide the what and how of learning, but do we address enough of the why to truly engage the modern learner?

In his keynote, David Smith, co-founder of Virtual Gurus and lifelong fan of disrupting learning, will explore what is needed to move training from traditional methods to the digital and virtual worlds successfully, how we can address the why for our learners, and what is needed from us as learning professionals to transform learning for the 21st century.

12:00-1:00 p.m.

Facilitator Emotional Intelligence
Nelson Santiago

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It reflects your ability to join intelligence, empathy, and emotions to enhance your understanding of interpersonal dynamics. As a facilitator, you need to be able to apply these principles to enhance the learning experience of your participants while managing emotions in the learning environment.

During this session, we will explore three skills needed to accomplish success:

  • Emotional awareness: Identify emotions and apply them to support participant involvement.

  • Respectful dialogue: Help participants feel respected and appreciated by sincerely and specifically acknowledging their ideas and contributions to maintain self-esteem when things do not go as expected.

  • Listening with empathy: Demonstrate an understanding of the learners' situation by acknowledging the feelings they are experiencing.
