Kentucky unemployment highest in 20 years

(Business Courier of Cincinnati) Kentucky registered a December unemployment rate of 7.8 percent, up from 7 percent in November and 5.3 percent in the same 2007 month. The state's Office of Employment and Training said in a news release that the jobless rate was the highest since May 1988. (Read entire story.)

Jobs sit open because job hunters lack needed skills

(Charleston, SC) About 68,000 people are receiving unemployment in South Carolina and that does not take into account the people who are looking for work without getting unemployment benefits. But, there are jobs available in the state. The only problem is that many of those jobs require specific skills. It can be one of the most frustrating things for a job hunter as they see positions sitting open and they don't have the skills to even apply.

Report: GSK to cut 6,000 jobs

(Triangle Business Journal) GlaxoSmithKline is likely to announce thousands of new job cuts this week, a British newspaper is reporting. The Sunday Telegraph, without citing its sources, says GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) is "putting the finishing touches" on plans to lay off some 6,000 of its 100,000 workers. The drug company could announce the cuts when it announces earnings Feb. 5, the newspaper says. (Read entire story.)
