The ASTD Competency Model defines what practitioners in the training and development profession need to know and do to be successful in the field. If you are interested in learning more about the model and the research that informs it, you’ll have several opportunities to engage with the study’s authors and representatives of ASTD while you’re at the ASTD 2013 International Conference & EXPO.

William Rothwell and I will lead the concurrent session, “Becoming a Better Learning and Development Professional: New Research from ASTD,” on Tuesday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m. Bill and I will also be available to answer questions at the Competency Model booth in ASTD Central at select times throughout the conference.

The Competency Model Study: The Training and Development Profession Redefined will be released during the conference and will be available for purchase at the bookstore.  This book presents the academic research behind the model in a practical, actionable way. Ultimately, it helps training and development practitioners add power to their development plans by honing in on the key competencies and trends that really matter.

The 2013 Competency Model features ten areas of expertise (AOEs) built on six foundational competencies. It reflects a profession dedicated to developing and improving the performance of individuals and organizations through many ways that extend beyond training. If you have not seen the new Model, you can view it at www.astd.org/model. There you will also find job aids that support the Areas of Expertise.
