The Association for Talent Development (ATD), formerly ASTD, is hosting its first program dedicated to the talent development strategies that support acquisition, retention, and continued progress of veterans in the workplace. ATD, in partnership with the VetStrong Program and Training Modernization Group, has designed a program that features many best practices from the private and public sectors. The program includes initiatives used by leading vet-friendly employers such as Hilton Worldwide, SAIC, The Carlyle Group, USAA, and Whirlpool.

It also targets key topics including:

  • building a talent acquisition and retention process inclusive of veterans
  • using innovation to integrate veterans in the workplace
  • understanding the U.S. Army Labor Management Model and Forecast.

The ATD Values Vets program has been designed to help enterprises with existing veteran initiatives to become more effective, and to encourage those enterprises with a desire to make veterans a part of their talent development strategies to get started,” stated Joe Barto, President, Training Modernization Group.

In addition to collaborations with Hilton Worldwide, WILL Interactive, the VetStrong Program, and others, ATD is partnering with Veterans Story Project: Wounded to Work from Palisades Media Ventures, an innovative media development company based in Washington, D.C., with a focus on public affairs issues to build community and awareness for veterans in the workplace.

Veterans Story Project: Wounded to Work focuses on the challenges and successes among veterans suffering from the “hidden wounds of war,” including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, as they try to re-enter civilian life and get jobs. Unemployment among these wounded veterans is 18 percent versus 9 percent for veterans without wounds. Veterans Story Project includes a documentary that will follow veterans as they look for work and start jobs.

The work for Veterans Story Project begins with the ATD Values Vets Conference, and attendees as well as others in the ATD community will have the opportunity to contribute to this project by participating in a national poll of talent development professionals and veterans who are part of the Wounded Warrior Project. The poll will be reported on by USA TODAY.
