This blog series explores each component of the talent development framework, why it’s important to the field, and what resources ATD offers to practitioners who want to learn more.
Sometimes called new employee orientation, refers to the process by which new employees acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviors to become effective members in their organizations. A standard framework for onboarding includes the following:
- new employee orientation
- structured meet and greets
- check-ins with the manager
- self-directed learning time
- scheduled on-the-job training.
To be effective, an onboarding program has to be sustainable, scalable, cost effective, and easily deployable. Onboarding should make the employee feel comfortable in the new environment, help them learn about daily tasks as well as long term performance goals and convey the impact that company culture and values have on their job.
