Looking for an icebreaker to start your course with the right tone? ATD has an app for that. Not sure what kind of game would work best for your technical program? ATD has an app for that, too. Need an energizer to refresh a lagging workshop? Yep, you guessed it; ATD has an app that can help you. Well, actually, it’s just one app.
Launched in 2013, the Trainer’s Toolkit App now contains some 50 original classroom and online facilitation activities for engaging and energizing your classroom. Activities include icebreakers, topical openings, games, energizers, group activities, reviews and teach-backs, and session wrap-ups. Users also can develop and save their own activities, as well as use a “favorites” tool to bookmark their preferred activities. These are all stored in an individual toolkit within the app. There is a “notes” functionality that allows users to record their comments on each activity.
The really unique thing about this app is that it helps facilitators use simple activities as the valuable, strategic means to an end that they are. Those trainers who frequently use games or create their own classroom activities know that energizers, for example, are great for fighting off post-lunch malaise. But they can also stimulate short-term memory and help create a gentle transition between break time and active learning.
Activities were designed by industry experts and selected for inclusion by facilitation guru Elaine Biech, author of 90 World-Class Activities by 90 World-Class Trainers. Twenty activities come with a free download of the app, and users can shop for more—new activities are being added all the time, making this app a continually valuable resource for trainers.
Other functions include an in-activity timer to keep sessions running smoothly and on time, as well as curated content from bestselling ATD publications, including book chapters and TD magazine articles. For both new and seasoned facilitators, there is an “Intro to Facilitation” section with tips on trainer competencies and how-tos for developing your own icebreakers, energizers, and games. The app can be accessed on both iOS and Android devices.
Here’s the best part: it’s free.
