To celebrate the forthcoming release of Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Training Evaluation, we asked authors Jim and Wendy Kirkpatrick to tell us about their go-to ATD reads. Here’s what they recommend.

Speak for a Living
Anne Bruce

In this book, Ann tells it like it is. She candidly shares the pluses and minuses of leaving the corporate cocoon to start a business based on public speaking and persuading people to pay for your expertise. This book was extremely helpful when our business was getting started.

Making E-Learning Stick
Barbara Carnes

Barbara Carnes, a colleague and friend, provides practitioners with techniques and tips for how to get training graduates to actually apply what they’ve learned. After all, if they don’t, there will be little bottom-line value that the learning and development team can demonstrate to stakeholders.

Change Management Training
Elaine Biech

Elaine has found time to be a mentor to us over the years, in addition to writing and editing many wonderfully helpful books. This one is no exception. She encourages us to see our job as more than simply training and developing employees; we play an important role in contributing to business and culture change.

Coaching Basics, 2nd Edition
Lisa Haneberg

Coaching is one of the best methods of maximizing the value of what is invested in training and development. This book is a good tool for those tasked with coaching for performance improvement, or those who teach coaching skills to others.

If you’re attending ATD’s International Conference & Exposition (May 22-25 in Denver), you’ll have the opportunity to purchase an advance copy of Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Training Evaluation before its October release. Jim and Wendy will be on hand to sign the book on Monday, May 23, at 5:30 p.m. in the ATD Store, located in Lobby B, Street Level.

If you’re not attending the conference this year, you can still read a sample chapter of Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Training Evaluation.
