Wearable Electronics and Training

Monday, January 5, 2015

The next wave of training tech may be in the form of wearable electronics that can link trainers to trainees. One particular form, put on display at the most recent International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, involves eyewear equipped with cameras and sensors. Designed for traditionally hard skills-based occupations, these glasses may help close the generational skills gap. The glasses have many functions, including barcode scanners and biometric sensors, but one of the main uses may be for training purposes. With the glasses’ video link, a mentor can see exactly what a new hire is doing, meaning that the individual with expertise can observe, guide and instruct someone in real time during a particular task, regardless of geographic distance. This can help in the skilled trades particularly, as an aging but skilled workforce is quickly exiting the field and being replaced by younger, less experienced rookies. An elderly employee may not be able to climb onto a rooftop to service an HAVC unit, “but he can sit behind a computer and tell a 20-year-old what to do," Aaron Salow, the CEO of the company who manufactures the glasses said.
