Onboarding Keeps Employees Engaged

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

According to organizational studies, about 90 percent of companies believe their employees make the decision to stay with or leave a company within the first year. Obviously, making a positive impression on new employees is critical in maintaining high levels of engagement and keeping turnover low. One of the best ways to do this is by making sure rookies are immediately plugged in socially, educated about their role within the big picture of the organization, and made aware of opportunities for career growth. A simple way to get the ball rolling is to assign new hires a mentor. At least for the first few weeks or months, a mentoring program gives an employee the opportunity to learn from experience, as well as build connections within the workplace. Managers should also think about extending onboarding processes. Studies show only about 15 percent of organizations extend onboarding beyond six months, and only 2 percent extend it past a year. By continuing training and development processes, employees not only sharpen their skills, but feel like valued members of the team.
