Canadian Government Paying for Skills Training

Friday, February 20, 2015

The Canadian government is making tens of thousands of dollars available to small business owners who want to train employees, but lack the resources to do so. Pending approval from the provincial government, the Alberta Skills Fund could make up to $40,000 available to help small businesses train employees in customer service, supervisory skills, literacy, succession planning, project planning, and technical ability. Annya Massé, a senior policy analyst, presented the idea for the fund to local business owners at a roundtable discussion in early February. Darren Hinkel, a local small business owner in attendance, said the program was appealing. "How do you take someone who might not be an expert at customer service . . . and train them to help a customer?" Hinkel said. "You don’t [always] know all the things to train for until the opportunity is in front of you." The program pays up to $4,000 per employee, with one-third coming from the employer and two-thirds coming from public funds.
