Eliminating Employee Dissatisfaction May Not Create Employee Satisfaction

Monday, February 23, 2015

Modern science has a lot to say about what motivates employees—what keeps them happy and engaged, or dissatisfied and disconnected. Psychologist Frederick Herzberg conducted a series of studies to uncover the root causes of employee engagement, and came to a startling conclusion. The factors that contribute to dissatisfaction and satisfaction are not necessarily related, meaning that establishing a positive work environment won’t automatically create satisfied employees; it will simply mean they are no longer dissatisfied. Herzberg found that true employee satisfaction stems from a fulfilling job experience, which he called job enrichment or vertical job loading. Organizations where employees are challenged, where their knowledge was deepened through programs or benefits rewarding achievement, had the most satisfied, most productive workforces. Additionally, these organizations had the most cohesive work cultures, the highest levels of company loyalty, and the most motivated teams. As organizations grow, it is also important for them to focus on the personal and professional growth of their team. A balance should be struck between increasing job responsibilities for employees while also increasing enrichment opportunities.
