Hiring for Meta-Skills

Friday, March 13, 2015

While hard skills are important to a successful workforce, smart employers aren't simply hiring individuals for their resumes. They are also looking for individuals who demonstrate the ability to continuously learn new skills and adapt to the needs of an evolving marketplace. These individuals are more valuable than their order-taking counterparts and will be the ones who break the molds of an organization and possess the potential to help a company grow. There are four categories within this suite of soft skills: seeing, understanding, envisioning, and doing. Seeing involves testing and recognition. The seeing employee will listen carefully and resist snap judgments in negative situations. Understanding is related to seeing as a skill. If seeing is related to “small picture” situations, understanding relates to the bigger picture. Empathy, emotional intelligence, and intuition are all related to understanding. Meanwhile, an envisioning employee is one who doesn't simply follow orders, but can imagine other possibilities—including better ways of accomplishing daily tasks. Finally, the doing employee is the one who puts an envisioned plan into action. Hiring for these meta-skills will help companies grow, evolve, and eventually succeed.
