Skills Gap in Sweden

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

A skills gap, youth unemployment, and integrating new immigrants are among Sweden's greatest economic challenges, according to a report from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Although Sweden's economy is one of the most resilient in Europe, these issues must be addressed if it is to continue its growth. “Sweden has navigated through the crisis with limited damage, thanks to a combination of strong macroeconomic, fiscal and financial fundamentals, the contribution of a competitive and diversified business sector and inclusive social policies,” OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said. “But this should be no cause for complacency, because Sweden, like any other country, still faces challenges to stimulate productivity growth, improve educational outcomes and ensure that tomorrow’s workers have the skills for thriving in a 21st century economy.” To deal with these problems, the Swedish government recently formed the Innovation Council, which focuses on strengthening the global competitiveness of Swedish companies.
