Training for Short Attention Spans

Millennials switch media types 27 times every nonworking hour, according to a 2012 study. So it’s not surprising that old training tactics, like those with dozens of text pages broken up by the occasional activity, often repel younger employees and fail to achieve their goals. Millennials prefer to get their information in small chunks and are nonlinear learners, more comfortable hopping around between bits of knowledge than absorbing large volumes of information in one format. This isn’t just a cultural phenomenon, and it’s not a matter of Millennials lacking discipline: Researchers have shown that the way media are consumed has rewired young people’s neurological pathways. For training to be most effective, present information in easy-to-digest portions.
