Avoiding Toxic Management Styles

Thursday, May 7, 2015

For years, traditional management styles took the “my way or the highway” approach. This notion is beginning to fade in the modern workplace, but there are still plenty of negative holdovers. One byproduct of that management style, micromanaging, is an easy trap for those in charge to fall into, and it rarely benefits the manager or the employer. It’s important to remember that if the company hires smart, hard-working, and talented individuals, managers should let them do what they were hired to do. However, allowing employees this level of autonomy sometimes leads to mistakes. Harping on these failures is easy, and often satisfying, but nothing positive comes out of such interactions. Negative managers make their workers feel apathetic and productivity often suffers. Instead, managers should focus on employees' strengths and achievements to help them stay motivated.
