Signs of Turnover

Tuesday, May 5, 2015

Despite efforts to boost engagement and morale, sometimes employee turnover is unavoidable. Research has shown that an employee who is ready to leave is more likely to share a company’s secrets or do things to sabotage the company’s overall goals. Because of this, it’s critical for managers to recognize the warning signs that an employee is ready to walk. According to a recent Utah State University study on voluntary employee turnover, there are several identifiable signs that indicate an employee’s departure is imminent. Some of these warning signs include becoming less constructive during meetings, hesitating to commit to long-term projects, losing interest in moving up within the organization, showing less of a concern for pleasing supervisors, losing interest in training programs, a failure to suggest innovative ideas, becoming less social at work, and displaying an overall decrease in productivity. According to researchers, employees exhibiting six or more of these behaviors may be on the verge of leaving. Head researcher Tim Gardner said of these behaviors, “As the grass starts to look greener on the other side of the fence . . . chances are that others will soon notice that you've lost your focus.”
