The 5 Stages of Employee Development

Monday, June 15, 2015

Successful employees evolve throughout their careers, and there are five major phases that top employees will go through at each job. First, new employees will just be happy to be there. New hires will be enthusiastic about their new positions, and will be excited about the potential to exceed expectations. Second, employees will feel that they want to stay. The euphoria of landing the new job will fade, but it will be replaced with the determination to succeed. During this phase, employees will wonder if they are doing well and meeting expectations, and will generally need feedback from the management team. Employees enter the third phase of development when they begin to feel like they belong. They understand they have demonstrated their value, and will generally feel they are good at what they do. This leads to the fourth stage, where employees will wish to maximize their personal growth opportunities and begin to blaze a forward-facing career path. However, this phase can be dangerous, as it is characterized by a self-serving “what’s in it for me” attitude. Successful employees are fully actualized in the fifth phase, where their ambition is tied to the company’s overall success, rather than simply their own.
