Active Management Styles Increase Engagement

Thursday, May 28, 2015

According to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers, about 2.7 million people quit their jobs in February. The highest turnover rates were in the professional and business services sector, along with healthcare and social assistance. It may be more comfortable to think that the majority of these instances were the result of a poor work ethic or some fault of the employee, but the reality is that in many cases, poor management techniques are often to blame when an employee decides to leave. Micromanaging, ineffectual feedback processes, and poor leadership can all contribute to an employee’s decision to jump ship. It’s well understood that turnover is costly, so smart companies are doing everything they can to increase retention rates. However, if managerial misconceptions persist within the organization, employees will continue to be dissatisfied and leave in droves. By opening up to new ways of thinking and shifting from passive to active management styles, organizations can begin to see increases in engagement and retention.
