Garnering Quality Feedback

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Understanding the thoughts and concerns of employees is an important aspect of improving engagement levels, but soliciting quality feedback is often a difficult task. One typical way to get that feedback is to set up a suggestion box, where employees can anonymously share their opinions and criticisms. Such systems shield employees from retribution and encourage them to be more open and honest. However, these systems also keep suggestions hidden from other employees, and make it easy for companies to simply toss suggestions in the trash bin. Instead, companies should form a culture of transparency, where there is no fear of offering suggestions or requesting changes. If employees are able to express their ideas in a public forum, the best ideas will gain support and the company can become nimbler as communication is bolstered. A second way to increase quality feedback is to take the typical open-door policy one step further. While having available management is great, it doesn’t always motivate employees to come in and chat. Managers should be actively asking their employees for input in order to gain ground-level insights into the company’s day-to-day activities.
