Skills Gap Worst in United Kingdom

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Looking at data collected between 2012 and 2013 from across 22 developed countries, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development found that the skills gap in UK nations was the widest. The group found the largest differences between the literacy and problem-solving skills of unemployed young people and their employed counterparts. When numerically represented, the average gap in the 22 countries measured was 6.5. For UK countries, it was 12.6. The group said that ensuring all young people leave the education system with the skills necessary to succeed must be a priority. "Policies should focus on helping the Neets [young, unemployed individuals who are not in school], including those who have become disengaged, to renew with education or integrate into the labor market," the report read. Also of concern are young people who have dropped out of the labor market completely. "Many members of this group are far from the labor market not only as a result of a lack of job skills, but also because they are not looking for a job and thus may have fallen under the radar of education and labor market institutions," the report cautioned.
