Finding the Leadership Balance

Monday, July 6, 2015

Autonomy is important in the workplace; no employee likes being micromanaged. However, a completely hands-off leader can be a detriment to the team, and ultimately sabotage productivity with a “support only when needed” attitude. When managers take a hands-off approach, they often argue that they are allowing their employees to use the skills and talents they were hired for in the first place. Unfortunately, even if this leadership style is well meaning, it can create long-term problems and frustrations for employees. Too often, the laissez-faire model for management is used as an excuse for skirting the responsibility and accountability necessary for managing others. Feedback and input are critically important for an employee’s success, and leaders should provide these without being overly critical or obtrusive. Sitting down with employees regularly to set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, results-driven, and time sensitive can help employees know where they are and plan for where they are going.
