Writing Effective Job Descriptions

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Hiring a new employee is an important process, and communicating exactly what you’re looking for to job seekers is an essential first step. Providing detailed job descriptions is a time-consuming process, and one some companies tend to forgo. However, there are benefits to investing time in this activity before the hiring process starts to ensure the new employee will be exactly who the company needs. It’s not as simple as posting an ad on a job board. First, a company should perform an analysis of what the position will require, and formulate interview questions and a job listing based on these determinations. Then, a timeline for the new employee’s orientation should be decided upon. A path for growth should also be articulated, as well as the training and development the employee will need to thrive. Compensation and rewards packages must also be decided upon, and the metrics by which the employee’s performance will be measured. Lastly, liability concerns must be taken into consideration to ensure the hiring process will be fair, and the job itself will be in compliance with all employment rules and regulations.
