Training Cuts Phishing Breaches by More Than Half

Thursday, August 27, 2015

Phishing attacks can lead to tremendous financial losses, from declines in productivity to rebuilding compromised credentialing systems. An average size company may lose up to $3.77 million per year due to cyber attacks, according to a recent report released by Wombat Security Technology and the Ponemon Institute. However, one of the best ways to combat these specific types of attacks is through comprehensive security training. According to the report, phishing email click-through rates declined an average of 64 percent after training sessions. “In talking with security officers, we know that many do not expect much benefit from employee training as part of their defense against phishing attacks. This research proves that security officers should expect more from employee education and seek providers who can provide results like these,” Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, said in a statement. “As the threat landscape continues to intensify and phishing tactics become more sophisticated, this research shows that employees who have undergone security training are far less likely to fall victim to a phishing attack.”
