Creating Successful Remote Workers

Monday, September 28, 2015

From 2005 to 2011, the remote workforce population grew by 80 percent. It’s estimated this figure will grow by another 21 percent over the next year. And while this might seem like a positive trend at the surface level—businesses are now hiring the best talent, regardless of their location, with less overhead cost—there are several problems with relying on remote employees. One of the biggest issues is the decline of workplace culture. Even top talent will perform at mediocre levels if they feel disconnected or underappreciated. It’s important that companies that rely on remote workers bolster their culture, and ensure their off-site workers feel connected to it. To do this, companies should create a tribe mentality. Make sure employees, regardless of location, understand their purpose, know the company’s values, and participate in its rituals. Second, companies must strive to close the communication gap. With technologies like Skype and FaceTime, it’s simple to have a face-to-face meeting over great distances. Finally, leadership must be encouraged at every level. When remote workers know that their voice matters, they will be empowered and engaged.
