Gender Bias and the Cult of  Busy

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

According to several high-profile studies, corporate diversity initiatives are doing little to help women break through the glass ceiling. Female employees continue to face major obstacles in achieving workplace success. But they aren’t alone in the struggle. The cult of “being busy” has become ubiquitous in the workplace and affects both men and women negatively. It could be that diversity and inclusion initiatives aren’t effective because they are linked to an outdated and destructive management mindset and workplace culture. According to Robin Ely, a professor at Harvard’s business school, the number of work hours has increased by 9 percent in the past 30 years, and more than ever, workers believe it takes an investment of longer hours to succeed. Talented women on the way up in the business world burn out due to these ever-increasing demands and the stress of competition that ultimately favors men. Instead of asking for assimilation into a model that is increasingly showing its flaws, it might be time to rethink the model itself.
