Outward and Inward Talent Management

Friday, October 9, 2015

Managers may not realize it, but they are working two jobs. The first is obvious: They must hire, lead, and manage a team of workers to accomplish a goal. This involves communicating tasks, holding team members accountable, setting objectives, and reviewing performance. Their second job, however, is sometimes overlooked: managing their own career. Very few managers have received training on career strategy, self-marketing, or personal branding, and many expect their careers will unfold organically. The good news, however, is that these two jobs are intimately related, and by looking at talent management as a two-sided coin, managers can make an informed decision about where to go professionally. The steps good leaders take in managing their team, when applied to their own career, can help them objectively view their own career development. Just as managers need to set goals for their team and hold members accountable for meeting those goals, they too should set their own professional goals and understand what it will take to accomplish them.
