Amazon and the Importance of Engagement

Friday, November 13, 2015

Amazon has been much maligned in the media recently for its harsh corporate culture. New hires are encouraged to work late, live up to unreasonably high standards and betray coworkers to get ahead. However, since the initial New York Times report, Amazon has made considerable changes to its policies to bolster engagement and retain more workers. Amazon's new Amazon Connections program is designed to improve employee relations and generally make the company a more pleasant place to work. The new system anonymously collects information from employees and is focused on providing clear, honest feedback to management. Amazon’s new system seems to be working well, but the problems the company faces are not at all unique. Research conducted by Gallup shows that engagement levels in the American workplace are woefully low, but that engagement is a key element in a company's overall success. High levels of engagement reduce workplace accidents by 50 percent and decrease service defects by over 40 percent. Turnover rates in highly engaged environments are reduced by almost 70 percent.
