The Double-Edged Sword of Working from Home

Thursday, October 22, 2015

For many employees, office life may seem like a chore. The monotony of the day-to-day tasks they are responsible for completing can wear them down. For these employees, working from home might seem like a welcome way out, but is a home office really all it’s cracked up to be? Certainly there are advantages of allowing employees to work from home. The practice increases employee loyalty and job satisfaction while decreasing turnover rates. And those who work outside of an office also seem to have lower levels of stress and fatigue. Studies have shown that these workers consistently get higher marks on their performance evaluations, as well. However, there are downsides that many managers and employees alike often fail to consider. Because people who work from home have more control over their time, they often find that balancing their personal and professional lives becomes difficult, as everything has a way of blending together. Research also suggests that it may add to their personal and domestic burdens, because those who work from home are often expected to take on the bulk of familial duties. This can create a lot of undue strain, especially if they are still expected to take on a full professional workload.
