Employee Satisfaction Is Not Employee Engagement

Friday, October 2, 2015

If you ask most managers the difference between employee engagement and employee satisfaction, you might be met with a blank stare. It’s easy to see the two terms as interchangeable, and use them as if they are. However, there are subtle, yet important, distinctions, and understanding them will make clear the relationship between the terms—and why they are both important goals. Colin Shaw, CEO of Beyond Philosophy, says that satisfied employees are relatively happy about their day-to-day job duties. They enjoy the work, are pleased with their pay and benefits, and see possibility for growth in their company. Overall, they come to work, do their job well, and then go home. Engaged employees, however, are truly passionate about the work they do. They actively seek ways to better their work, boost their productivity, or solve company-wide problems. Engaged employees will constantly exceed the expectations that are placed on them, and as such are slightly more valuable to the organization, as they are the ones who will truly drive customer loyalty.
