Wellness Programs on the Rise

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

More companies are offering workplace wellness programs than ever before, and for good reason. Healthy employees are more productive and engaged, and they boost workplace morale. According to the Aflac WorkForces Report, close to half of the nearly 2,000 businesses surveyed said their companies sponsor some sort of wellness program, up from 30 percent in 2012. And not only are there more programs offered, but businesses seem to be more effective in executing these wellness initiatives. More than half of employers who offer wellness programs said their program was effective this year, up 7 percentage points from 2014. About 40 percent said the programs helped lower health insurance premiums. But not all programs are created equal. In order for a program to be a success, it should be tailored to the workforce and the overall culture. The study found that wellness participation is highest at companies that also offer financial guidance education, voluntary benefits, and flexible scheduling. It was also higher at companies that increased the frequency of their benefits communication in the past year.
