Attention Under Attack

Monday, January 4, 2016

As industries become more fluid and 24/7 access to workplaces more common, the global workforce seems to be more efficient than it’s ever been. However, that isn't the case. Global economic indicators suggest that employees, particularly in westernized countries, are working more hours yet producing less. Experts say the problem isn’t due to laziness or lack of engagement; it has to do with attention. Modern workers are too busy. They have too much going on, too much information to process, and too many distractions. According to researchers, about 47 percent of the time, the modern worker’s attention is wandering involuntarily from the task at hand. Attention is a growing commodity, and those who can maintain focus in modern, fast-paced workplaces are highly valued. Many managers at companies including GE, Nike, Carlsberg, Accenture, IKEA, and Sony have turned to mindfulness training to keep their employees engaged in their tasks and in the present moment. This helps employees keep distractions at bay and pay attention to what they are doing, while increasing productivity and morale.
