The Importance of Relaxation

Tuesday, December 29, 2015

In 2015, many top executives worked to reshape their company’s culture by rethinking the work-life balance. By offering time for employees to rest and rejuvenate, companies boosted employee well-being, assuaged employee burnout, and increased employee engagement. And  a more rested, focused, and productive workforce positively affected the bottom line. However, in order for culture to shift, it must be supported by the highest levels of management. "CEO[s] and managers have more influence than they think they do," says David Hassell, CEO of 15Five, a San Francisco–based software company. "I think they see that most of their employees are checked out, and that's a big problem." One of the biggest areas CEOs are focused on is the idea of quality time off. Stephen Fenwick, CEO of DHL Express Americas, says he has fully bought into the idea of “no email on weekends.” An email from an executive over the weekend can cause undue stress for dozens of workers, when they should be using the weekend to recharge. He’s encouraged all senior management at DHL to reserve weekends for relaxation, and only communicate about work if it’s truly urgent. "It's a big mindset change,” Fenwick says. “For the most part, people are sticking to it and benefiting from it."
