The “Will or Skill” Problem

Monday, January 4, 2016

When employees struggle in their position, employers sometimes attribute the problem to issues concerning their "will or skill." If employees make a mistake, the thinking goes, maybe they weren’t trying hard enough, or maybe they were trying their best but didn’t have the skills necessary to accomplish the task. This oversimplification faults workers while allowing management to remain blame-free. But managers control every aspect of the workplace, from the physical environment to systems and processes. They are responsible for hiring and training employees, so it makes little sense to completely blame an employee when something goes wrong. If an error occurs, it could be for a number of reasons. Processes may be poorly designed. Communication might have broken down. Manpower and employee morale may have been stretched too thin. When something goes wrong, it’s important for managers to take a look at the problem holistically. More than likely, the problem is bigger than one employee’s inability or refusal to perform to standards.
