Mindfulness Improves Productivity, Concentration

Monday, March 7, 2016

Employees who practice mindfulness and workplaces that help foster mindful practices have a clear edge over their competitors, according to research. The benefits of mindfulness, including improved attention spans, lower levels of stress, and better overall health, consistently improve employees' abilities to meet deadlines, avoid mistakes, and deliver better service to customers. One of the primary ways mindfulness does this is by improving practitioners' overall attention levels and ability to be present in the moment. These individuals are less likely to be distracted and have a better ability to concentrate on the task at hand. This often leads to increases in “fluid intelligence,” or the ability to think outside the box to solve problems. And this isn’t merely anecdotal. Those who practice mindfulness have observably different brain patterns from those who don’t. As workplaces evolve, the ability to focus is becoming more important; studies have shown that workplaces are full of interruptions that threaten productivity. Even small disruptions such as instant messaging may add approximately 27 percent more time to a given task. Mindfulness acts as a buffer against this.
