It’s incredibly important for organizations to protect their data. If proprietary or sensitive information leaks, the results can be disastrous. Cybersecurity breaches can erode customer trust, sully reputations, and affect revenues adversely. So what causes these breaches? According to a new report released by AXELOS, it’s not vulnerabilities in networks exploited by hackers, but human error. The report states that organizations are failing to protect themselves from cyberattacks due to a lack of adequate employee training. Even if staff are trained on security protocols, often this training is out of date and won’t help defend against modern attacks. The report found that in the United Kingdom, nearly 75 percent of all major organizations polled suffered a staff-related security breach last year, and more than 50 percent were caused by human error. These errors likely occurred, according to the report, because staff aren’t even made aware of cybersecurity issues. Respondents in 25 percent of the organizations polled said that less than half of their staffs had undergone any awareness training. And while the majority of organizations do provide some awareness training, most executives think that the training isn’t very effective in changing risky behaviors in employees.
