Employee Engagement Keystones

Sunday, May 1, 2016

Gallup recently reported that only 32 percent of American employees describe themselves as “engaged” and only 13 percent of workers worldwide would say the same. While the American rate is more than double the global average, that’s no reason for celebration. Experts agree this figure is still dismally low and, even more troubling, the numbers in America haven’t significantly changed in nearly 15 years. It could be that the efforts to engage employees don’t work because there are larger issues at play, or that there is simply too much “off the shelf” thinking about engagement solutions, and that the actual efforts taking place are doing nothing more than paying lip-service to the issue at hand. The organizations really getting engagement right do not follow a one-size-fits-all model, and have instead identified “keystones” on which to build their engagement practices. If today’s organizations cannot identify their keystone, be it a core value or identity, and instead rely on prepackaged solutions, they can never expect to achieve true engagement among their employees.
