Most Small Businesses Do Not Formally Train

Thursday, May 12, 2016

A new report released by SurePayroll found that 63.1 percent of small business owners are unwilling to consider a job applicant who has no experience. The remainder said they would be willing to train people if they don’t have the right experience. The reason is that the majority of small businesses don’t have a formal training process in place for incoming employees; time and lack of resources are the biggest hindrances for these employers. As for training overall, nearly 30 percent said it’s a learn-as-you-go situation. Those companies that did have formal processes in place were equally divided on how long the processes take; 20 percent said their training for new employees lasts more than a month, and about the same amount said training lasts more than a week. One of the survey’s respondents commented, “As an employer, we give the necessary training to succeed at a particular position. It is then up to the individual employee to follow through. I don’t think there is ever failure in training but possibly failure of appropriate placement for a particular position. Some employees excel in a position and some don’t.”
