Planning for Successful Onboarding

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

New employees' success depends on the skills and natural talents they bring to the organization, but in order for them to thrive, the company must take their onboarding processes seriously. Even individuals with great potential, if not adequately supported, will quickly become discouraged and either fail to live up to expectations or become completely disengaged. First, employers must take the time to plan. They should set specific goals they want to accomplish with an onboarding process, milestones to hit, and a list of the things a new employee will need to hit the ground running. However, employers can’t move too quickly. Small businesses in particular can be guilty of rushing new hires through onboarding, and new employees quickly become overwhelmed with information. Adequate training must also be readily available. This is arguably the most important element of the onboarding process. By assessing employees' needs and the role they have been hired for, training can be constructed to match the organization’s predetermined goals. Onboarding should also be an ongoing process, with follow-up sessions scheduled at predetermined times to gauge and adjust new hires' progress.
