Training Won’t Fix Everything

Monday, April 11, 2016

Training, particularly in a customer service capacity, is critically important. However, it shouldn’t be viewed as a panacea. There are some things no amount of training will fix. There are some issues that must be addressed head on, that cannot be trained away. The first of these is poor employee selection. In this sense, employee training is similar to marriage counseling. A marriage has the best chance of working if the individuals entering into it are a great fit for each other from the start. Counseling can help iron out the kinks, but if the partnership is fundamentally flawed from the beginning, it more than likely won’t work out. Another problem training can’t necessarily fix is a lack of employee empowerment. Management can offer training sessions on any manner of subjects, but unless employees are truly empowered to actualize their potential in their day-to-day tasks, productivity will always remain stagnant and employees will become disengaged.
