Amazon Opens Training Program

Monday, June 6, 2016

Retail giant Amazon.com says it wants to help spread its institutional knowledge of employee training and development. Amazon’s program, called Career Choice, is well known for being ambitious, and one that prepares low-level workers for higher-paying careers. In a LinkedIn post, Juan Garcia, Amazon's global leader for career advancement, says the company will be open sourcing the program, which would essentially provide other organizations with a road map they can build upon for their own purposes. At its core, Career Choice is a take on tuition-reimbursement programs. However, Amazon prepays 95 percent of the costs, and workers aren’t required to study something directly related to their career at Amazon. The company’s CEO, Jeff Bezos, said the approach helps develop a stronger workforce overall, not simply for Amazon. “The last thing any enlightened company wants is for any employee in their company to feel trapped in that job,” Bezos said at a Recode conference in California. “If they want to be there, great. But if they want to be a nurse, then help them do that.”
