Employees Are the Weakest Link in the Security Chain

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

According to a new report titled Managing Insider Risk Through Training & Culture, more than half of the organizations surveyed attributed a security incident or data breach to a negligent or malicious employee. Additionally, 66 percent of the 601 data protection and privacy training professionals surveyed for the report said that employees are the weakest link in any security chain. "It’s no surprise that employee-related security risk is their number one concern,” said Michael Bruemmer, vice president of Experian Data Breach Resolution. “As we have seen in our incident response service that we do for clients, about 80 percent of all the breaches we service have a root cause in some type of employee negligence.” However, not many organizations are prioritizing security training for employees. The survey found that only 35 percent of senior executives think it should be a priority to ensure that their employees are knowledgeable about the data security risks threatening their organization, and 60 percent say their employees are not knowledgeable of the security risks the company faces.
