Bullying Takes Many Forms

Thursday, June 16, 2016

Bullying doesn’t end after primary school. Twenty-seven percent of respondents of a 2014 survey currently deal with or have dealt with workplace bullying in the past, according to the Workplace Bullying Institute. About 72 percent said they had witnessed an incident of workplace bullying. These statistics are sobering, but they might be even higher if individuals realized that workplace bullying comes in all shapes and sizes. Not all bullies are created equally, and the ability to recognize abusive behavior, regardless of its form, is the first step in putting a stop to it. According to Lynne Curry, president of the management consulting firm, The Growth Company, workplace bullies have various styles and approaches. Some of the most common include aggressive individuals who thrive on insults and name-calling. These people are what most think of when they hear the term “bully,” and one of the easiest to spot. Another, more insidious type of bully is the individual who will do anything to make come out of a situation on top. This type of bully will spread rumors, subvert other’s efforts and even sabotage their co-workers to make themselves look better. Both are harmful, and it’s important to understand how bullying can manifest itself in covert and overt ways.
