Employee Burnout and the 40-Hour Workweek

Tuesday, July 19, 2016

More employees are rethinking their workweeks, and many are putting in more than the traditional 40 hours per week. However, that isn’t as positive as it may seem on the surface. According to a recent study released by Staples Business Advantage, 91 percent of employees say they work more than 40 hours a week, but this isn’t to get ahead of the game—it’s just to stay afloat. That’s a problem, because employees are suffering from burnout at an alarming rate, becoming disillusioned and unproductive. They might even leave their positions, forcing organizations to scramble to fill up the gaps. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. "Employees are happiest in a workplace that meets their needs and considers their well-being. The index found that employees are specifically looking for wellness programs, comfortable break rooms with technology, fresh snacks and beverages to help them do their job efficiently, and a variety of spaces within the office for different types of work," says Neil Ringel, executive vice president, Staples Business Advantage.
