4 Methods for More Effective Training

Thursday, August 4, 2016

Training is important in any organization, but the way this training is being delivered is rapidly evolving. According to Training magazine, traditional stand-and-deliver instructions only made up 46 percent of the total training hours in 2015, and managers are increasingly looking to new formats and methods to best deliver information. This outside-the-box thinking has benefited many organizations and led to training programs that have a greater impact across the board. Successful companies keep in mind four factors when establishing a new training program. First, they have to pick the right format. Videos, podcasts, online simulations—all training modalities have their strengths and weaknesses. It’s important to pick the right one for the right situation. Additionally, it’s important that employee time is respected. If employees believe they are wasting their time, there is no way training can be effective. Interactivity is also becoming more important. The marriage of instruction with real-world experience is one of the most effective ways of making sure that information “sticks.” Lastly, it’s important to make sure managers support training initiatives. Input from leadership has a major impact on how employees prioritize training. If they see managers taking it seriously, they are more likely to as well.
