McDonald's Training to Count as College Credit

Friday, August 19, 2016

In an effort to help employees succeed in their careers, McDonald's Restaurants of Canada has entered into an agreement with Colleges Ontario. Starting in September, Canadian McDonald's employees will be able to count their in-house management training toward a two- or three-year business administration diploma at one of the education group’s 24 public colleges. “It is a hint of where we are going in the future in post secondary education,” says Linda Franklin, president and chief executive officer of Colleges Ontario. She adds, “More and more we are hearing that, particularly for Millennials, a big part of what is interesting to them in their jobs is the opportunity to advance their education. None of these internal qualifications or training programs offers a path to a public credential.” Under the agreement, the college group recognizes an employee of the fast food chain who has completed at least two of the four required company courses for a management position and has earned the equivalent of a first-year course on their two- or three-year diploma track. By doing this, the employee could apply to school as a second-year student, saving about $4,500 in tuition.
